The Book of Cards

Today Lulu decided that she would do something nice for the neighbors in her apartment building. She wanted everybody to feel good about living there. That's why she made a nice card for all her neighbors. Lulu got out some thick paper, and some markers. On a sheet of paper she drew a picture of the building.  Then she wrote the words "it's nice to be your neighbor" at the top of the paper. She also drew a picture of herself standing in front of the building. Lulu made lots of these cards in the same way. After a while she had made a big pile and she was ready to give them out. She collected her stack of cards, and she went to each floor in the building.  Then she slid each card under the door of every apartment in her building. It took her a long time, as she walked up and down the hallways. But finally Lulu was finished. Then she had another idea. Lulu also wanted to collect drawings from her neighbors. She needed to make a big poster and put it on the wall near the

Kites Fly Away

One day Piggie was walking through the forest when she saw an empty metal can on the ground. Piggie realized that somebody had dropped or thrown the metal can away. Piggie picked up the metal can and kept walking. Then piggie saw another metal can on the ground.  Piggie picked up the second empty metal can. Piggie kept walking and then saw a third empty metal can on the ground. Piggie was wondering why there were so many metal cans on the ground. Then Piggie saw her friend bunny. And bunny was carrying a backpack. But the backpack had a hole in it. And the backpack had empty metal cans in it, but the metal cans were falling out.  Piggie walked up to bunny and told him that there was a hole in his bag. Piggie also said that she had picked up three empty metals cans that fell out. Bunny said thank you and he put his broken backpack down. Bunny asked piggie if she could stay with her broken backpack, while he left to go get another one.  Piggie said yes and waited there. Bunny came back w

The Lost Book

One day Lulu was at home getting ready to go outside. She had a surprise that she wanted to give her friend Sally. Lulu put the surprise in a paper bag. Then Lulu went outside and walked to the bus stop. She was going to take a bus to Sally’s home. When the bus arrived, Lulu got on and found a seat near the back. She put down the paper bag on the seat next to her. Lulu also had a book with her, and she began to read her book. After a while, Lulu suddenly heard the announcement for the bus stop she needed to go to Sally’s home. Lulu quickly got up and ran out of the bus before the doors on the bus closed. Then Lulu walked to Sally’s home. When Lulu knocked on Sally’s door, Sally opened it. Sally was glad to see Lulu, and knew that Lulu was coming over to bring a surprise. But then Lulu realized that she forgot the paper bag on the bus. Lulu told Sally that she had to go find it. Then Lulu ran back to the bus stop but the bus had already gone by then. Lulu decided to wait for the next bu

Sharks Stuck in Fishing Nets

One evening Lulu was reading about scuba divers. Those are people who swim underwater for a long time, and they breathe from tanks of air which they carry on their back. They also wear goggles on their eyes and nose. Lulu imagined what it would be like if she could swim underwater for a long time. Lulu read a story about a scuba diver who became friends with some sharks. Every day the scuba diver would go and swim with the sharks, and the sharks would show the scuba diver different parts of the ocean. Then one day the scuba diver went swimming deep underwater in the ocean, but didn’t see the sharks. And the scuba diver’s air tank was going to become empty of air, so the scuba diver went back up, out of the water and onto land. The next day the scuba diver looked for the sharks again. After a while the scuba diver saw one shark far away. The scuba diver was swimming over to the shark. Then when the shark was nearby, the scuba diver could see that it looked sad. The scuba diver took a cl

Lulu and the Spare Tire

Lulu and the spare tire One afternoon Lulu's friend Sally was coming over for lunch. Lulu went downstairs to wait for her outside. When Sally's mom drove up in front of Lulu's building, there was a popping noise. Lulu looked around to see where the noise came from. It sounded as though it came from the car Sally's mom was driving.  Lulu looked closer, and could see that one of the tires was going flat. And the air from the tire was coming out. Sally and her mom stepped out of their car to take a look. They also heard the popping noise. They could all see that there was a sharp nail that had poked into the tire.  The nail must have been on the road, and the car drove over it, and that's what popped the tire. Then Sally's mom said that they needed to change the tire. There was a spare tire in the trunk, at the back of the car. And Lulu watched as Sally's mom opened the back of the car and took out the spare tire.  Then Sally's mom took off the flat tire, a

Lulu Plays Hide-and-Seek

One afternoon Lulu went to the grocery store with her mommy. While they were at the grocery store, they could play hide-and-seek. But not with each other. At this grocery store, the workers hid a stuffed toy kangaroo somewhere on the shelves. And if kids could find it, then the kids would get a sticker from the cashier. Lulu decided that she would look for the stuffed toy kangaroo while they were shopping. First Lulu and her mommy walked around the fruit and vegetables section. Lulu looked all around, but didn’t see the stuffed toy kangaroo anywhere. She looked under the tables of fruit, to see if it was in a fruit box. But that’s not where it was. She looked behind the vegetables, but that’s not where it was. Then they walked over to the eggs section. There were lots of cartons of eggs. But there was no stuffed toy kangaroo around the eggs. Lulu knew it must be hidden well, so she kept looking for it. Then Lulu and her mommy walked to the bread section. Lulu wondered if the stuffed to

Lulu Makes a Blanket

One day Lulu was reading about how clothes are made. While she was reading, she learned that sometimes people make their own blankets. Lulu wanted to try, and she got some thread and a needle. Then Lulu needed some fabric. She had some old white shirts that had holes in the arms, which she didn't wear anymore. She cut up those shirts into small squares.  Then she drew different things on the squares she had cut out of the shirt. She wanted to draw different fruits. On the first square cloth she drew some bananas. On the second square cloth she drew some strawberries. On the third square cloth she drew some grapes. On the fourth square cloth she drew some mangos. On the fifth square cloth she drew some apples. On the sixth square cloth she drew some oranges.  Next Lulu cut some more squares of cloth and she drew the shape of her hand on those squares. Then Lulu sewed all the square pieces of cloth together, and it made a big rectangle. There were drawings of fruit and hands on Lulu&

Lulu Uses Packing Tape

One afternoon Lulu was going to the park. When she got to the park she saw that some people were gathered around the pond. She walked over to see what they were doing. They were floating some toy boats around the pond. Lulu wanted to try, but she didn’t have a boat. Then she thought of an idea. She would use a small cardboard box. Lulu went home to look for a small empty box. She found one and brought it back to the park. Lulu walked over to the pond and put the box in the water. She watched as it floated for a minute. But then after a couple minutes the box became wet, and water started to get inside it. The small box wasn’t able to float anymore. Lulu picked it up out of the water and saw that the cardboard box was falling apart. She couldn’t use it anymore, and she threw it away. Then she had another idea of what to do differently. She went home again and looked for another small cardboard box. She found one, and this time she made a change. Lulu also got out some packing tape. Then

Lulu Makes a Macaroni Necklace

One afternoon Lulu was at the grocery store with her mommy. When they put everything in the shopping cart, they were ready to checkout. They went to the cashier. There was a new woman working there who they had not seen before. Lulu said hello to the woman, and the woman said hello to Lulu. Then Lulu’s mommy noticed that the cashier was wearing a necklace. It was a very nice necklace with shells that was all around it. Lulu’s mommy liked how it looked. Then Lulu’s mommy was finished buying the groceries, and it was time to go. When they got home, Lulu decided to make a necklace for her mommy. Lulu got out some thread and measured the length to go around her neck. Then she was thinking about what to put on the necklace. Suddenly she had a great idea. She would put macaroni on the thread to make a macaroni necklace. Of course it would be uncooked macaroni, otherwise it would break and fall apart. Lulu got out the box of macaroni from the kitchen. Then she counted the macaroni pieces. One

Lulu Reads to Others

One afternoon Lulu went to the playground to play. She also brought her backpack, with some books in it. She was going to sit and read on the bench after playing. When she reached the playground she saw that nobody was playing on it. There were other kids there, who were standing around it. Then she got closer and she saw why. There was a sign that said “wet paint.” Workers had painted the playground, and it was still wet. That’s why nobody could play on it. Otherwise they would get paint all over themselves. Lulu had an idea, since there were other kids standing around. She told them that she could read them all a story. They liked that suggestion. She took out her book, and read them a story. It was about two elephants playing a game called tug-of-war. In the story the two elephants were pulling a rope opposite from each other, to see who would win. And the winner could choose what to do next. Then Lulu had an idea. All the kids at the playground could play tug-of-war together. That’

Lulu and the shrinking blanket

One day Lulu was playing in the park. After a while she wanted to rest, and she sat down on a bench. Lulu saw a frog jumping around. She imagined it would be funny if she could jump around like the frog. Or maybe if she was small enough to sit on the frog’s back, as it jumped around. While Lulu was sitting on the bench, her friend Sally came over to say hello. Sally had a backpack, and there was something inside it. Sally opened her backpack and showed Lulu that there was a shrinking blanket inside. Lulu asked Sally what the shrinking blanket did. And Sally said that whatever the shrinking blanket is put on top of, will become smaller. Lulu asked Sally if the shrinking blanket could also make things bigger. Sally said yes, when the shrinking blanket is turned upside down. Then Lulu had an idea of putting the shrinking blanket upside down on the frog, to make it bigger. Sally helped Lulu find the frog that was jumping around. They found the frog behind a tree. Then they put the shrinkin

Lulu and the Pond

One day Lulu was walking through the park. She walked to the other side of the park where there was a pond. When she got to the pond she saw that some people were fishing there. She watched as they held their fishing rods and were trying to catch some fish. Lulu wanted to see if she could also catch any fish. She went to the store and got a fishing rod. Then she went back to the pond. She tried for a while but didn’t catch anything. There was a bridge for walking that crossed over the pond. Lulu walked to the middle of that bridge and tried fishing from there. She put his fishing line in the water and waited. As she pulled her fishing rod she felt that it was a little heavier. She started to pull the fishing hook out of the water. When she brought it all the way up to her, she saw that it had caught a wet shoe. Somebody had dropped a shoe there. Lulu put her fishing line back in the water and waited some more. She tried pulling her fishing pole again. And she felt that it had caught so

Lulu Dreams of a Spaceship

One night Lulu was asleep and she started dreaming. In her dream she was standing in line to get on a spaceship. This was a spaceship that would take passengers to the moon. She was waiting a long time, because the line was very long. Then when it was her turn, she got on the spaceship and sat in a seat. The spaceship had lots of passengers, and they were all going to the moon for the first time. In her dream, Lulu was very excited. She had never been on the moon before. She had only seen the moon at night when looking up at the sky. And it looked very far and small. But it was big enough for a spaceship to fly there and land on it. Then when the spaceship was full, it was time to go. Everybody had to put on their seat belts. And before they sat down, they had to put on a spacesuit. The spacesuit would help them breathe on the moon, because there was no air on the moon. In Lulu’s dream, her friend Sally was also on the spaceship to go to the moon. Both of them sat in their spacesuits i

Piggie and the Rocks

One evening piggie and bunny were walking through the forest to their friend’s place. and they reached the river. There was an old wooden bridge on the river, but right now it was closed for repairs. They still wanted to cross the river. And they thought of different ideas of how they could go to the other side. Then piggie had an idea of what they could do. She told bunny that they could collect a lot of big rocks, and then throw those rocks in the river. And by throwing enough rocks in the river, the rocks will pile up and stay above the water. Then they can walk across the rocks and not get wet. Piggie and bunny went to look for big rocks. Piggie found some and brought the rocks to the edge of the river. Then piggie wondered where bunny was, because bunny wasn’t there. Piggie went to look for bunny. After a while, piggie found bunny near a very big rock. But the rock was bigger than both of them. And bunny couldn’t push it by himself. Piggie tried to help bunny push the rock. Both o

Lulu and Toy Elevator

O ne evening Lulu was going home. She rode the elevator in her building up to her apartment. When she went inside her apartment, she decided she wanted to make a toy elevator for her stuffed animals. She took a small box, and tied a string to it. Then she put the string over the back of a chair.  As she held the other end of the string in her hand, she pulled it down. And that brought the small box up to the top of the chair. This was her toy elevator. She was able to pull the box from the ground up to the table, which was next to the top of the chair.  Then Lulu got four of her toy stuffed animals. She got her toy zebra, her toy lion, her toy cat, and her toy dog. First she put the toy zebra in the box on the ground. Then she pulled the string until the box was lifted up to the table. Next she put the toy zebra on the table. After that, she put the toy lion in the box on the ground. Then she pulled the string until the box was lifted up to the table. Next she put the toy lion on the t

Making Grape Juice

One day Lulu went to go play in the park. Her daddy packed a lunch for her. And then she walked to the park. When they arrived at the park, Lulu saw her friend Sally. The girls ran around and played on the playground. Then they got hungry and stopped to eat lunch. They sat on a bench to eat lunch together, while taking a short rest. Sally’s mommy had also packed a lunch for Sally to eat. Lulu opened her box of lunch to see what her daddy had packed. There was a cheese sandwich, some grapes, and a bottle of water. And Sally opened her box of lunch to see what her mommy had packed. There was a peanut butter sandwich, some carrots, and a bottle of water. Lulu and Sally both ate their sandwiches. Lulu dropped a piece of her sandwich. She picked it up and walked to a garbage can to throw the piece away. When she came back to the bench she wasn’t looking where she was sitting. By mistake Lulu sat on her ziplock bag of grapes. The grapes were all squished and squashed. And the grapes that got

Building a Bird Feeder

One day Lulu was reading about birds. She read that sometimes people make a bird feeder, which is a little box that holds seed. And they put the bird feeder box outside for birds to come and eat the seeds. Lulu decided that she would try and make a bird feeder. She got a small box, and put some seeds in it. She also wrote on the box “bird feeder.” Then she went outside and put it on the ground next to a tree in the park. What she saw next surprised her. A squirrel ran over, and started eating the seeds. Lulu walked over, and the squirrel ran away. Lulu took the bird feeder home and attached a string to it. Then she went back outside and hung the bird feeder from a branch in a tree. Again she waited to see if a bird would come to the bird feeder. But what she saw next surprised her again. A squirrel ran over, climbed up the tree, went over to the branch, and climbed down to the bird feeder, and started eating the seeds. Lulu walked over, and the squirrel ran away. Lulu took the bird fee

After the Storm

Lulu woke up one morning, the day after a big storm. The storm had brought a lot of wind and rain the day before. And it was noisy outside the window the day before. Lulu could hear it all night long. Now in the morning it was quiet and calm. Lulu had breakfast, and afterwards got ready to go outside. She and her daddy were going to the grocery store to get some things. When Lulu went outside, she saw what the storm had done. All over the streets there were garbage cans that had been knocked down. Lulu saw some garbage company workers sweeping up the garbage fallen on the streets. Further down the street there were some light poles that had been knocked down. Lulu saw some electric company workers who were fixing the broken light poles. As they kept walking down the street there were more things that happened because of the storm. There was a small tree that had fallen down on top of a parked car. Lulu saw some people cutting up the fallen tree to take it off the parked car. When Lulu

Baskets and Kites

One day when Lulu was going to the park. She was wearing a hat, but it was very windy. While she was walking, the wind was very strong, and it blew her hat off her head. Lulu tried to grab it, but she wasn’t fast enough. She saw her hat get carried up by the wind. It went very far away in the sky until she couldn’t see it anymore. Lulu kept walking to the park. When she got there, she saw some people in a big field. The people were flying kites, because it was so windy. Many of the kites were designed to look like different things. Some looked like butterflies, some looked like birds, and some just had lots of colors. Then Lulu had an idea, but she would need help from her friend Sally. Lulu went to Sally’s home and told her the idea. Lulu wanted to use a giant kite, and tie a basket to it. Then Sally could fly Lulu up in the air. Lulu and Sally went to the store, and got the biggest kite that was there. It was bigger than both of them. Then they also got a very big basket, large enoug

Lulu and the Mixed Up Clothes

One morning Lulu woke up and was getting ready for the day. When she went to look for her clothes she couldn’t find any clean ones. All her clothes were in the clothes basket waiting to be washed. Lulu decided to take her clothes to the laundromat. After breakfast, Lulu put the dirty clothes in a small cart, and she pushed it all the way to the laundromat. At the laundromat Lulu saw her friend Sally who was also there to wash some clothes. Lulu saw that the last two empty laundry machines were next to each other, and Lulu and Sally used those. Lulu and Sally put all their dirty clothes in the two empty laundry machines. Then they put laundry soap in it, and started the washing machines. Lulu suggested that she and Sally go to the park as their clothes were in the washing machines. Lulu knew what time they would need to put the clothes in the dryer. After Lulu and Sally played in the park for a while, Lulu asked somebody what time it was. When they told her, Lulu said it was time to go

The changing colors

One day Lulu was going for a walk. When she got to the park, she saw a small dog running around a man. The man had a red ball. He was throwing the ball, and the dog was chasing the ball. Then the dog would grab the ball in its mouth and bring it back to the man. Lulu watched them doing this for a few minutes. Then the man threw the ball very far. And Lulu saw the red ball roll under some bushes and they couldn’t see it. The dog ran under the bushes to chase it, and they couldn’t see the dog. And then the dog came back holding a purple ball in its mouth. How did that happen? The man was confused. Then he threw the purple ball towards the bushes, and the purple ball rolled under the bushes and they couldn’t see it. Again the dog ran under the bushes to chase the purple ball. And they couldn’t see the dog through the bushes for a minute. Then the dog came out of the bushes, and was holding the red ball in its mouth. Lulu wondered how that happened again. And the man was also confused. Why

Lulu and the Bubble

One day Lulu was playing in the park when she saw a street performer. This street performer was making some giant bubbles. He was holding a wand, which was a long plastic handle with a big circle on the end. And there was a large bucket near his feet. Lulu watched as the street performer dipped the wand into the large bucket, and it was filled with soapy water. Then the street performer waved the wand around in the air and it made a large bubble. There were people gathering around to watch the street performer do some more tricks. Then the street performer blew the large soap bubble up into the air, and it floated around for a minute until it popped. Then the street performer asked for a volunteer and Lulu raised her hand. The street performer had Lulu stand in front of the crowd. He dipped the want into the large bucket, and waved the wand from the top of Lulu’s head down to her feet. The wand was large enough that the circle on the wand was bigger than Lulu. It made a bubble around L

Riding the bus

One day Lulu wanted to go to the library. She got ready and went to the bus stop to wait for the bus. When the bus arrived, Lulu got on the bus, which was almost full, and there was one empty seat left, and Lulu sat down. Then as the bus was driving down the road, there was a loud popping sound. There was a big bump, and the bus slowed down and stopped driving. Everybody on the bus was wondering what was going on. The bus driver got out and walked around the bus outside. The people in the bus looked out the windows to see what was going on. Then they saw the bus driver at the right hand side near the front of the bus, and one of the tires was flat. The bus driver said that he had to wait for a tow truck to arrive. But the bus driver said there was also another bus coming behind them in a few minutes. And the people could ride that bus instead. When the second bus arrived, the people from the first bus got onto it. But Lulu could see that the second bus was becoming full, and there were

Wet paint

One day Lulu was walking outside when she saw a sign on the ground. The sign said “wet paint.” She looked in front of her and saw that part of the sidewalk had been freshly painted. But Lulu also saw that some people didn’t see the sign, and they walked through the wet paint on the ground. The people’s shoes made paint footprints on the ground as they walked ahead. Lulu wanted to see what would happen if she walked through the paint. She stepped onto the wet paint and continued walking forward. As she looked back, Lulu could see that her shoes had also made paint footprints on the ground. Then Lulu had a funny idea. She wanted to make horse footprints on the ground. Lulu went home and got some cardboard. And she cut out two shapes of horse feet, and she put those on the bottom of her shoes. Then Lulu went back outside to the place where the ground had wet paint on it. Lulu stepped onto the wet paint and then walked forward. As she walked, Lulu looked back, and on the ground was paint f

Treasure hunt notes

After dinner one day, Lulu wanted to make a treasure hunt. She got out seven pieces of paper and seven envelopes. Then she wrote messages on each piece of paper, and put it in the envelopes. She went and hid those envelopes around her home. Each piece of paper had a clue of where to find the next one.  Then Lulu gave her mommy the first envelope which had clue number one in it. The paper inside the envelope said, “go look where you keep food cold.” Lulu’s mommy went to the refrigerator and opened it. Inside the refrigerator was another envelope with another clue.  Lulu’s mommy took the second paper out of the envelope and read clue number two. The second paper said, “go look where you brush your teeth.” Lulu’s mommy went to the bathroom, and saw an envelope taped to the mirror. It had clue number three in it. Lulu’s mommy took the third paper out of the envelope and read the next clue.  The third paper said, “go look where you throw away things.” Lulu’s mommy went to the garbage bin, a

Lulu and the musicians

One day Lulu was walking in her neighborhood, when she heard something. She listened carefully and it sounded like music. But she wondered where it was coming from. When she looked around, but couldn’t see what was making the music. She thought maybe the music was coming from a car that was stopped at a red traffic light. But then the traffic light turned green and the car drove away, and Lulu could still hear the music. Lulu kept walking until she could hear the music become louder as she got closer to it. Finally Lulu walked all the way down the street to a big field near the park. And there she saw some musicians playing some instruments. They were playing the guitar, and the drums, and also a piano. Lulu asked them what they were doing there. They told her they were a new musical group, and they wanted to practice playing music for people outside. Lulu asked them what the name of their musical group was. And they said they were called The Wonderful Whispers. Lulu thought that this
