Building a Bird Feeder

One day Lulu was reading about birds. She read that sometimes people make a bird feeder, which is a little box that holds seed. And they put the bird feeder box outside for birds to come and eat the seeds.

Lulu decided that she would try and make a bird feeder. She got a small box, and put some seeds in it. She also wrote on the box “bird feeder.” Then she went outside and put it on the ground next to a tree in the park. What she saw next surprised her.

A squirrel ran over, and started eating the seeds. Lulu walked over, and the squirrel ran away. Lulu took the bird feeder home and attached a string to it. Then she went back outside and hung the bird feeder from a branch in a tree. Again she waited to see if a bird would come to the bird feeder.

But what she saw next surprised her again. A squirrel ran over, climbed up the tree, went over to the branch, and climbed down to the bird feeder, and started eating the seeds. Lulu walked over, and the squirrel ran away. Lulu took the bird feeder down, and was thinking about what to do next. Where could she put the bird feeder that squirrels wouldn’t be able to reach it?

Then Lulu had an idea. She went home and got some balloons that would float in the air. She attached the bird feeder to the balloons with some string. Then she went back outside to the park, and let the balloons float up in the air. Some birds flew to the bird feeder and started eating the seeds. Then some more birds flew over, and some of their beaks poked the balloons. The balloons popped, and then the bird feeder fell to the ground.

When the bird feeder box fell to the ground, all the seeds fell out. The birds flew away, and some squirrels ran over and started eating the seeds. Lulu laughed. She walked over to the spilled seeds and picked up the bird feeder box. Then she had another idea. She went home and got out her pencil, and erased the words “bird feeder.”

Now she wrote “squirrel feeder” on it, then went back outside. She put the box back on the tree and watched what would happen again. This time no squirrels came over. They were all full from before. And now some birds flew over and ate some seeds. Lulu had one final change she wanted to make. She took down the box, and wrote on it “bird and squirrel feeder.”

Then she went back outside and put the box back on the tree and watched. This time she saw some birds fly to the box and eat some seeds and leave. And she saw some squirrels climb to the box and eat some seeds and leave. Lulu laughed and went home.

When she got home, she drew a picture of a box with seeds in it, hanging on a tree. And she drew squirrels and birds eating out of the box. Then Lulu ate dinner with her parents. After dinner, she read for a while. Then she got ready for bed. She brushed her teeth and laid down. Then she closed her eyes, and went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
