Lulu And The Glass Jar
One day Lulu was making some breakfast. She wanted to have some toast. Lulu got out a slice of bread, and she put it in the toaster. Then when it was done, she put it on a plate. She got some jam out of the refrigerator and spread the jam on the toasted bread. Lulu looked at the glass jar of jam and saw that it was now empty.
She was going to throw it away, when she thought that she could do something else with it. Lulu washed out the jar and dried it with a towel. Now it was clean inside. She wondered what she could use the jar for now. Lulu went to her mommy and showed her the jar. Lulu asked her mommy for an idea of what to do with it.
Mommy suggested that Lulu could make the jar into a decision jar. And write down different choices of something on pieces of paper, and put the papers inside the jar. Lulu was waiting for Jimmy to come over, and they were going to spend the day together. But they had not yet decided what they would do. Then Lulu wrote down some ideas of things they could do that day.
She got out four pieces of paper. On the first piece of paper, she wrote "go to the library." On the second piece of paper, she wrote "go to the park." On the third piece of paper, she wrote "ride bicycles." On the fourth piece of paper she wrote "go visit Sally." Then Lulu folded the four pieces of paper and put them in the jar. And on the lid of the jar, she wrote down "decision jar." Then she waited for Jimmy to come over.
After a while, there was a knock on the door. Lulu opened the door and Jimmy was standing outside. She invited him in. Jimmy asked what they were going to do that day, and Lulu said she had a surprise for him. She brought over the decision jar and told him that she wrote down some ideas of what they could do that day. Jimmy said that sounded great. Lulu opened the jar, and held it out to Jimmy.
He reached inside and pulled out a piece of paper. He unfolded it and read it aloud. It said "go to the library." Jimmy said that was a good idea, and Lulu agreed. They got ready and left. They got on the bus and rode it to the library. When they arrived, they saw a sign outside the library that said it was closed for repairs. The library doors were locked, and there was nobody inside.
Now Lulu and Jimmy had to find something else to do. They walked down the street and saw a new shop. The sign outside the shop said that it was a bookshop. Lulu and Jimmy went inside and looked around. There were a lot of different sections of the bookshop, on many topics. They walked to the gardening section and saw some books on how to grow things at home.
One of the books showed how to grow things at home, using glass jars. Jimmy said they should get that book and use it with Lulu's glass jar. She liked that idea and bought the book. Then they went back to Lulu's place. She opened the book and read a part that said they should put some soil and water in the jar. Lulu and Jimmy went downstairs to the lobby of her apartment building.
She asked the building manager if she could have some soil from one of the potted plants. He said yes, and she scooped some soil into the jar with a spoon. Then they needed some seeds. Jimmy and Lulu went to a garden store, and looked around at all the different seeds. Then they chose some tomato seeds.
They brought it back home and put the seeds in the jar. Then they put some water in it. Then they needed to wait for it to grow. Jimmy went home. After a few weeks, a tomato was growing out of the glass jar. And Lulu called Jimmy to come and see it. He came over and Lulu showed him the tomato. Jimmy said they should eat it.
And Lulu agreed. She said they could make some sandwiches and put tomato slices in it. She got some bread and some turkey slices and some lettuce. Jimmy and Lulu put some turkey slices and lettuce on the bread. Then Lulu took the tomato off the plant growing out of the glass jar. She cut the tomato into a few slices. Jimmy and Lulu put the tomato slices on their sandwich. Then they ate the sandwiches.
Lulu gave Jimmy the jar and the gardening book, and said that he could grow something next. He thanked her and left to go home. Then Lulu drew a picture of the tomato plant, and put the drawing on her refrigerator. Now she was ready for a nap. She laid down, closed her eyes, and went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
