Getting keys out of a grate
Lulu got a phone call one day, and it was her friend Sally. On the phone, Sally told Lulu that she dropped her keys outside on the street. And the keys fell down into a grate on the ground. Lulu said she would meet her outside and find a way to help.
When Lulu found Sally on the street, Sally was crying because she was sad for dropping her keys into the grate. The grate led to a space that went down below the ground. Lulu hugged Sally and told her that everything would be okay, and that they’ll find a solution together. Lulu tried to lift the grate, but it was stuck in place, and wasn’t moving at all.
Then Lulu had an idea. Lulu told Sally to come with her to the store where they needed to get some things to help them get the keys out. They walked to the store, and in the store they went to the sports section. Sally didn’t know what Lulu’s idea was, and she was curious to see what Lulu had in mind.
Lulu was looking carefully on the shelves in the sports section of the store, and then she found the first thing she was looking for — fishing wire. Sally didn’t know what Lulu was going to do with fishing wire, but Lulu said that there was one more thing they needed.
So Lulu looked around some more on the shelves in the sports section of the store, and then she found the second thing she was looking for — a fishing hook. Now Sally was confused. Were they going to go fishing instead? Lulu explained that the fishing wire and the fishing hook wasn’t to go fishing this time.
It would be used to try and grab the keys that had fallen down in the grate. Now Sally understood what Lulu was thinking. And Sally got excited because this was a great idea. They went to the cashier and bought the fishing wire and the fishing hook.
Then they walked back to the street where Sally had dropped her keys which fell through the grate on the ground. It was hard to see clearly down there. And they went back to the store and they bought a flashlight and some batteries. They put the batteries in the flashlight, turned it on and pointed the flashlight down into the grate.
Now they could see the keys. Sally held the flashlight, while Lulu prepared the fishing wire and fishing hook. Lulu tied the fishing hook onto the end of the fishing wire. Then Lulu slowly lowered the fishing hook through a gap in the grate, until the hook reached down to the bottom where the keys were.
Lulu bounced the fishing wire up and down a few times, trying to get the fishing hook to catch the keyring of the keys. Finally it worked and the fishing hook grabbed onto the keyring, and Lulu slowly pulled the fishing wire up. But then the keys bumped against the grate and got knocked off the hook, and fell down below again.
Lulu tried again, and got the hook to grab the keyring. Then the pulled the fishing wire up and very carefully made sure it didn’t bump against the grate. Then Lulu pulled the fishing wire with the fishing hook and keys, through the gap in the grate. Now the keys were out of the grate and Sally was very happy.
She hugged Lulu and said thank you. They wrapped up the keys in a napkin because the keys were dirty. Then they went back to Sally’s home and used some soap and water to wash the keys, to make them clean again. It took a long time to get the keys out of the grate, and now it was time for Lulu to leave.
Lulu said goodbye to Sally. Then Lulu went home and got ready for dinner. After eating dinner Lulu drew a picture of her and Sally using the fishing wire and hook to get the keys out of the grate. Then Lulu got ready for bed, and brushed her teeth. And she laid down, closed her eyes, and went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
