Counting things at home
One evening before dinner, Lulu was reading about numbers and was learning how to count to ten. Lulu decided to find some objects to collect together in groups of numbers, to be able to see how many of each object it took to collect that number.
With the number one, Lulu went and got one spoon and put that on the table. With the number two, Lulu went and got two forks and put those on the table. With the number three, Lulu went and got three knives and put those on the table. With the four, Lulu went and got four chopsticks and put those on the table.
With the number five, Lulu went and got five plates and put those on the table. With the number six, Lulu went and got six bowls and put those on the table. With the number seven, Lulu went and got seven cups and put those on the table. With the number eight, Lulu went and got eight napkins and put those on the table.
For the number nine, Lulu went and got nine pens and put those on the table. For the number ten, Lulu went and got ten pencils and put those on the table. Then Lulu’s parents said it was time to get ready for dinner. They asked her to clear the table, and to help set the table to have soup.
Lulu laughed because it almost looked like the table had been set, but with different numbers of everything. Because there was only one spoon, two forks, three knives, four chopsticks, five plates, six bowls, seven cups, eight napkins, nine pens, and ten pencils.
They didn’t need all those things for dinner, and Lulu put everything back. Then Lulu started over but only put things that they needed, onto the dinner table. She put three of each thing, for herself and her mommy and daddy. Lulu put three spoons on the table, three bowls on the table, three cups on the table, and three napkins on the table.
Lulu didn’t put any chopsticks on the table because chopsticks are not needed to eat soup. Lulu didn’t put any forks on the table because forks are not needed to eat soup. Lulu didn’t put any knives on the table because knives are not needed to eat soup.
Lulu didn’t put any pens on the table because pens are not needed to eat soup. Lulu didn’t put any pencils on the table because pens are not needed to eat soup. Then it was time for dinner, and they all enjoyed eating the soup. Then after dinner Lulu got ready for bed. She brushed her teeth with one toothbrush, and she went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
